The story is about the struggle of self-identification. Behind Franklin’s need of control and care, as an adult, is his confusion of identity. To represent this undeveloped, lonely adult figure. I designed this Moon jump, with a shape of a little castle and some individual parts that can be removed and thrown into the pool. It is the representation of his childish personality and predict the future that he finally shrinks into a child.
There will be a lot of movements of the inflatable and the actors will also interact with it. As the conflict of identity becomes more and more instance in Franklin, the inflatable may begin to “breath”–inhale and exhale – to emphasize his unstable status. He will also draw graffities on the inflatable, the soft sculpture will also fill up the space and even invade the outer space. At the end of the play, the inflatable lose all it’s air, in which, Franklin give up his hope, and dance to the end of the scene, alone.
I used Blender to create the modeling and rendering of the space. The use of shader and the use of physical simulation of a inflated material as became a interesting exploration in this project. Storyboarding in Blender helped me go through the narrative and emotional line of the script through scenic and lighting changes and help me better express my design idea.
